Identity
me.edu.au provides Australian educators with a digital identity or profile that is not limited by jurisdiction, institution, employer
or other professional affiliation. It facilitates connections, sharing and professional learning across institutions, sectors,
geographic, discipline and interest areas.
The Identity proof of concept project is investigating potential technical and strategic developments that might
strengthen and add to the value of me.edu.au as a digital identity service. Two major strands of investigation are emerging:
- Development of the educator profile to take better account of professional affiliations and to provide verification of membership of institutions, professional organisations, awards or services. Potential value to educators includes an aggregated digital profile, and enhanced online reputation, as well as greater connection points with other educators.
- OpenID as a solution to multiple logins and passwords required by educators across multiple services.
The project is running from February to July 2009. Potential partners are welcome to contact the project team for further
information. email: askedna@edna.edu.au
edna Simple Search
The new simple search is designed to provide a faceted approach to searching edna resources, enabling users to do a simple
search and then filter the results by a number of facets. It will be a fast powerful search of all edna collections including
learning resources, news and events, groups and lists, me.edu.au.
Search results will be filtered by the following facets:
- sector (e.g. schools or higher education)
- edna service (e.g. events,
groups or resources)
- format type (e.g. text or image) and
- conditions of use (e.g. OK to share)
The conditions of use facet is a new feature in line with edna's support of open education resources. It means users will be able to find resources that are free to use, share or modify. As well, educators who want to contribute open resources to edna can have their resources featured as "OK to share and modify" in search results.

edna Semantic Collections - ESC
ESC is a new tool to take advantage of the web 2.0 environment and harvest bookmarked items from key educators in Australia and worldwide. The tool at this stage is for internal use, to enhance the edna collection. It takes selected quality feeds and displays their items together with descriptions, subject tags and other useful metadata (some created through automation). Information management staff at edna then evaluate and select the items, together with their metadata, and add them if suitable straight to the edna collection. This has resulted in efficiency gains as well as a unique perspective on what edna users value. Through this we can continue to maintain the quality, relevance and timeliness of edna’s valuable collection of educational resources. The tool is known as ESC (edna semantic collection); it is a building block for further developments in harnessing user contributions to edna and employing features of the semantic web.
