- Recognition for experienced aged care staff
- The Aged Care RPL Guide is designed to support and assist existing workers in the aged care industry to compile a portfolio of evidence which can be presented to a registered training organisation (RTO) or qualified assessor for RPL (recognition of prior learning). The guide supports users gathering evidence for 12 units of competency from both the Certificate III in Aged Care Work and the Certificate III in Home and Community Care.
- New kitchen food for thought
- A new community kitchen offers flexible training options for single parents, mature age workers, seniors and disadvantaged youth. The kitchen, an initiative of Youth Projects Incorporated, a not-for-profit body funded by Victorian, Commonwealth and local government grants will provide training opportunities in hospitality and health promotion while also providing food for disadvantaged people in the local community.
- e-dayz08 calls for presenters
- This two-day event showcases innovative and leading edge e-learning approaches from across the entire South Australian VET community, and attracts teaching staff, management, administrative, library, student support and technical staff from both private and public providers, VET in schools, ACE/community organisations, enterprise based trainers, and group trainers.The E-dayz'08 Organising Committee is seeking a range of e-learning initiatives and case studies by way of discussion groups, presentations and hands-on workshops.
- Road map to country
- Services Skills Australia is seeking training organisations to run the Road Map to Country project. It is a pilot program aiming to support small business development in the Indigenous communities of Doomadgee and Kubin, on the island of Moa. Tourism and outdoor recreation skill sets, and literacy support services are within the project scope. Further information is available on the Service Skills Australia website. The closing date for Expression of Interest is 29 August 2008.
- Productivity Places delivering skilled Australians
- In less than five months more than 3,200 job seekers having completed training under the Rudd Government's Productivity Places Program. There are currently 572 Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) participating in the program delivering 3,402 qualifications from Certificate II to Diploma level. Over the next five years, there will be $1.9 billion to deliver 630,000 training places to meet increasing demand for skilled workers.
- Indigenous leader wants money for training
- Yolngu leader Galarrwuy Yunupinga has opened the Indigenous Economic Development Conference with a call for training resources for young indigenous people. He wants to see this investment replacing the Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP)scheme which has recently been reformed by the Federal Government.
- Farmers see value in webinars
- Virtual classrooms are being used by Yorke Peninsula women, in particular faming partners to learn about legal issues such as wills and trust entities. Experts in these fields used PowerPoint slides and whiteboards as part of the "live" presentations. These sessions have been provided by the South Australian Partners in Grain group.
- Supporting women in a non- traditional trade
- This new e-zine has been produced by Fiona Shewring as a result of winning $5,000 as the Institute for Trade Skills Excellence Teacher of the Year for Building and Construction Award in 2007. In this publication, she outlines the myths around women working in non-traditional trade areas, and presents case studies to debunk them. This project is supported by the Illawarra Institute Women's Strategy Unit and Building and Construction, Trades and Technology Faculty, Illawarra Institute.
- Interoperability standards for Australian education and training sector
- The Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee (AICTEC) has released two publications: a report entitled the "Interoperability Standards Report" and the "Charter of principles for cross-sectoral collaboration on interoperability across the Australian Education and Training Sectors."
- Indigenous mine training scheme nominated for award
- A mining training program for Indigenous trainees at Pilbara TAFE has been nominated for the Western Australian Training Awards.
- New public private partnership plan for indigenous workers
- The head of Fortescue Metals, Andrew Forrest has asked the Government to endorse his plan to encourage corporate Australia to create jobs for indigenous people. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has responded by committing 50,000 training places for indigenous Australians to support their entry into the workforce. However, the Kimberley Land Council says that if the plan is to work, there needs to be more investment in Aboriginal people's numeracy and literacy levels.
- New blog for training.gov.au
- Training.gov.au is the name of the new system that the Australia, State and Territory Governments are currently developing to make information about training more relevant and accessible. Three key features will be a national register of training providers and products; a database of current Training Package content; and the ability to produce customised reports for different user groups.
- education.au seminar - Mind over matter
- Professor Martin Westwell, Director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century will provide insight into how modern lifestyles and technologies are influencing the minds of the young and old. The seminar offers participants the option to register for a morning or afternoon session, or for the full day at a discounted price.
- WorldSkills Australia 2008 competition results released
- The names of the winners and their institutions have been released for the 2008 WorldSkills Australia National Competition. Trades range from auto electrical to welding, and include a component for VET in Schools. The sustainability award was won by vehicle painting across 10 criteria including energy, water, and waste. The Evatt Shield winner is Tasmania awarded to the region with the best overall score for all competitors.
- New institute to boost skills for Indigenous youth
- The Australian Government will contribute $6.75 million toward the establishment of the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development at Punt Road Oval in Melbourne. Both classroom and other facilities - lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, conference and sporting facilities - available at the redeveloped oval will be used for training. Young Indigenous people will be offered vocational education and training options to develop skills that provide the best opportunity to improve their employment prospects.
