More about HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Programs "Taking the lead" forum World AIDS Campaign Our Partners
WHO | UNAIDS

On World AIDS Day people from around the globe come together in solidarity with people living with HIV to raise awareness about the disease and to urge governments and leaders to fulfill their promises to do what it takes to halt and reverse the spread of the disease.

2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. Together with its partners, the World AIDS Campaign set this year's theme for World AIDS Day as "Lead - Empower - Deliver", building on last year's theme of "Take the Lead". Designating leadership as the World AIDS Day theme for 2007 - 2008 provides an opportunity to highlight both the political leadership needed to fulfill commitments that have been made in the response to AIDS - particularly the promise of universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010 - and celebrating the leadership that has been witnessed at all levels of society.

“Twenty years after the first World AIDS Day, we have come a long way. Leadership at both the international and national levels has generated the resources to build treatment and prevention programs that are saving lives and showing evidence of impact on the disease. Millions of people have benefited thanks to these efforts. However, the latest UNAIDS report on the global AIDS epidemic shows that HIV/AIDS is still a major health burden. We must all continue our work to prevent the disease from spreading further, to make sure that people living with AIDS have access to treatment and care and to ensure that resources are available to deliver on the promises of the international community”
