Indigenous leader calls for training resources

Posted August 9, 2008 13:32:00

Yolngu leader Galarrwuy Yunupingu has opened the Indigenous Economic Development Conference at this year's Garma festival.

Based in the Northern Territory's Arnhem Land , Garma is one of the leading Indigenous festivals in the country.

Issues to be discussed at the conference include financial accountability and Aboriginal employment.

Mr Yunupingu has used the occasion to reiterate his call to end welfare dependency in communities.

"I've been calling out for the last 10 to 15 years do away with CDEP alright - what you spend on CDEP resources should be put into training our young men and women," he said.
