Immersive learning no longer underground

For immediate release

Education.au, Australia’s national ICT agency owned by all Australia’s ministers of education and training, today formally announced the establishment of its Immersive Learning Unit.

The Immersive Learning Unit (ILU) will act as a channel and professional network for information and collaboration around immersive learning tools and technologies that are relevant to education and training”, says education.au CEO, Greg Black. “This will include areas like virtual worlds and what are called ‘serious’ games  - that is, electronic or online games that have an educative purpose built into them. This initiative will benefit all sectors of education and training as knowledge generated around the ILU’s activities will help reduce the risk of implementation for organisations and jurisdictions in an area of technology that is new to many educators.”

Education.au is establishing partnering relationships with a range of technology providers. “One of the goals of the ILU  is to bring together the industry partners and education sector to develop and deliver innovative services and products,” says Mr Black.

“In addition to the industry partnering relationships, we are establishing a national, cross-sectoral Immersive Learning Network (ILN) with educators  where the pedagogy underpinning immersive learning can be explored, developed and debated,” said Mr Black. “ We hope that this will help to build a national knowledge bank and enable Australia to take a leading role in using immersive learning approaches for the benefit of students. We also hope it will help develop an evidence base for administrators when making budget and resource decisions about immersive learning tools and technologies. ”

“We hope the ILU will become a community of educators, technologies, the education sector and industry partners, says Mr Black.”
